One year since starting my substack
Why am I still here? What will I be doing next?
OK where did the last 12 months go!? How are we nearly in November? I feel so lost in time but here we are. One year since I started my Substack. I thought I’d reflect on the experience a bit and what I might be doing next.
Why am I still here?
Mostly because of the people I have met and for the fun of writing and keeping a sort of journal.
I have kept up my monthly gaming journal round up with reviews during the month as and when. I must admit the reviews have dipped a bit for several reasons. I have played all the games that are 3 hours and under from my backlog and I also have a bit of writer’s block when it comes to reviews, of longer games.
Maybe review isn’t the right word for me anymore, and I’d like to chat about a game with a more personal slant, so it is sort of a review? I don’t know. It will just take longer for me to write about a game as they are taking longer to play AND I work full time now.
But I may try this with Pokemon Legends Z-A next. And I kind of tried this with my first impressions of Silksong.
In terms of a journey, I have attended several events this year and it has been so fun to add in person events to the often quite lonely gaming experience that I seek. I am not a multi player gamer so seeing people in person and chatting is really fun.
Although I am still shy and awkward so adding discords to the interactions has been awesome.
My favourite was probably the New Games plus event in London.
Changes
When I started the substack I had a Steam Deck and a Nintendo Switch and “hand me down” PC.
I have since invested in updating my PC somewhat and getting a Nintendo Switch 2. Therefore my writing focuses no longer just on the steam deck but it is still my preferred way of gaming.
For one I have more games on it, that suit it well, but also I love the ergonomics of it.
Other changes are that I have an idea / ambition to do a writing class. I am struggling to find the exact right one at the moment but hoping to do a course either focused on short stories or critical writing, and seeing how that inspires me going forward.
But I need to remember that I used to work 3 days a week and I am back to full time for a few months now (since March), hence it has been harder to game and write content for the substack.
What will I be doing next?
Well hopefully the writing class.
I also want to write about Pokemon and finish Legend of Zelda: BotW on Switch 2. I have ideas such as a Fallout Marathon in December to link in with the TV series. :D I am sure everyone has that. haha.
On a different note, I started to doodle a bit, but I am not sure if I share any images or if they even become relevant. But it feels nice to add more creativity to my life. :)
Where can I find you?
As I might have a bit less output here, you can generally find me daily on the Good Game Lobby Discord. :D (Click on “Discord” and join us, you know you want to).
But I do read other posts and write on the notes here still too.
Overall I am super happy with my consistency on here, and the main thing is that I have met so many lovely people through writing and video games. Looking forward to many more years hanging out together! :)

Congratulations on 1 year of Margot Plays 🎉🎉
Can’t wait to read your piece on Pokémon Legends Z-A - whatever that might look like - and others in the future! And also more ferret doodles ☺️
Congrats on the performance of sticking to this gaming and writing hobby for so long.
This means something! Keep on going and may it fulfill you and grow you! :)
